History is a big part of what makes up all of us.

Working to preserve that history is the Historic Preservation Alliance of Arkansas.

Executive Director Vanessa McKuin joins Arkansas Today to inform us about the alliance and their projects.

The alliance is the only statewide nonprofit organization focused on preserving Arkansas's architectural and cultural heritage.

McKuin says historic preservation is more than just saving old buildings; it is about creating and maintaining vital and sustainable communities.

The alliance offers several education programs such as the annual Arkansas Preservation Conference.

The group has had their hand in several successful projects including:

  • Passed Arkansas Real Estate Transfer Tax
  • Built constituency in 2009 to pass the Arkansas Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit
  • Secured additional state funds in 2012 to preserve and maintain Arkansas's historic county courthouses.
