Central Bobcats Baseball Report 02-25-13

The Central baseball team is off to a solid five and two start this season. The Bobcat's two losses have come against state ranked opponents in Dallas Jesuit and O'Connor high school. The squad hopes the strength of its non-district schedule will pay off down the road.

"These tournaments that we go to are meant to be hard for us, so that when we get into district and we face weaker teams we're ready for them," said Josh Sawyer.

"We went up to Austin and played a difficult schedule and did really good, a lot better than I think we all expected. Should have won both games, but it's over. I think that's going to help us carry momentum over into our district play," added Mickey Scott.

Central's incredible depth on the mound is one of the main reasons the Bobcats have found success early on. Their rotation features five returners and a few younger players, all of whom have shown the ability to shut down opposing offenses.

"We thought it would be about four or five guys, but now we think it's more like eight or nine that can step in and do the job and they compete. That's what it's about," said Head Coach Patrick Penry.

"It's useful in our district, because we can do match up to match up guys. We can have one guy come in and throw to one batter, because we have so many of them. It's helpful for us to have that many pitchers, because we have so many options we can do with them," added Sawyer.

While we are only one week into the season, this squad is confident they have what it takes to end a two year playoff drought.

"They have a lot of heart and they battle and they compete. They compete not only amongst themselves, but on the baseball field. That's our goal to get into the playoffs," said Penry.

"I feel like we are a lot better than we were last year. Everybody on this team has a part and a role they can play and helping us go win. We got a really good district, so we got to go out and compete," added Scott.

Central opens district play tomorrow at Abilene Cooper.
