San Angelo, Texas--Following in the football teams steps, the TLCA boys basketball team has turned into a force in their district.

"We've been doing great," Junior Guard Trey Mayberry said. "We've had our ups and downs but we're playing through it as a team passing it , getting open shots being smart about the game."

Currently, the Eagles are tied for first in the district with Ozona, the team they beat on Wednesday.

"Oh it was big we needed that," Mayberry explains. "That win really brought us up."

"It was huge to get the win, one for the record but two with our heads," Junior Guard Bryce Todd explained. "I think that mentally getting that win over Ozona proves that we can win against anybody in this district and that we have a shot at the title."

"For us, that was probably the biggest win to date," Coach Tim Howard added. "Because if we would've lost that game we would've dropped down to third place, so picking up that win put us in a position to now be back in the district title hunt."

This year's team is coached by former ASU legendTim Howard and he says that the experience the players have gotten over time is why they've improved so much.

"They understand how things are run, they understand how tough this district is so just being able to run the offense more efficiently play tougher and get physically stronger over the summer, I think that's made a big difference," Howard said.

A win on Friday against Eldorado would guarentee them their first UIL playoff appearance in a major team sport.

"It would be great it'd be the best thing, it'd be just the best thing, it would boost our whole school, we'd be better everything would go up after that," said Trey Mayberry.

"It'd be incredibly special I mean to be coming here from 8th grade and not make the playoffs and not make the team and be the team that makes the playoffs for the first time in any sport, it'd be huge," Bryce Todd said.

TLCA will play Eldorado on Friday.
