Hundreds gathered in Downtown San Angelo Friday and Saturday to celebrate Diez y Seis de Septiembre. KSAN's Nicole Sanchez spent the evening at El Paseo de Santa Angela and has more on the festivities.

For two years now, Mother Charity Pierce has taken her daughter to El Paseo de Santa Angela. She believes that this allows her daughter to learn the history behind her heritage.

"Just for her to know her background, because she is half Hispanic and half white and I want her to know what it is to be Mexican," Pierce says.

Haven and her family isn't alone celebrating Mexico's Independence Day also known as El Diez y Seiz de Septiembre. Hundreds participated in this 47th Annual Southside Lions Club "Fiestas Patrias" at El Paseo De Santa Angela.

"It brings the community together and it kind of reminds us of our foods, heritage our culture," Chairperson of the event, Monette Molinar says.

And for that reason, Chairperson of the event, Monette Molinar and dozens of other volunteers make sure that this event comes true each year.

"The aroma of the taquitos, gorditas, and the music and festivities and everything going on, so I think it's really, really good with the community as a whole comes out to support us," Molinar says.

The festivities for this two day event included more than 20 booths, mariachis, food, but most importantly celebrating and learning about one's heritage.

"It means a lot, it means spending time with everybody and having fun," Pierce says.
