San Angleo I.S.D. school administrators are hoping that $15.00 will be a large enough fine to remind students about a new cell phone rule. More than 2500 student cell phones were confiscated in the S.A.I.S.D. last year. As a result, many students were sent to "in school suspension," taking them away from regular class instruction. To help prevent this problem, school leaders have changed the rules. Director of Pupil Services Eddie Heath said, "This year, the student can be, it (the cell phone) can be on their person, but it can't be on display. It can't be visible, it can't be out, and it must also be on the off position." If a student decides to break this rule, the phone is taken up by the teacher and turned into the office. The student can picked up his or her cell phone at the end of the day, but only after paying a $15.00 fine. School leaders say any fees that are collected will go into a slush fund that will be used for student oriented services.
