Heat Wave Continues

Meteorologists with the National Weather Service and around the Concho Valley continue to talk about how abnormal this summer has been.

Patrick McCullough said, "We have had a somewhat unusual summer in that we have had, especially through June, July, and the first few days in August, much cooler, much wetter then normal summer. In fact by the time we got through the end of July we actually hit our rainfall for and our normal rainfall for the entire year."

Over all, temperatures have been cooler this summer as we have yet to reach the 100 degree mark, however if you've step outside this past week you know summer finally made it to West Central Texas.

Patrick McCullough said, "We have gone into a more typically West Texas summer. The ridge of high pressure that normally brings us hot dry weather through most of the summer months settled in a little later then normal this year but it settled in and it's parked itself."

The attention now turns to the tropics as it appears activity may be on the rise and with that there may be a break in the heat wave.

Patrick McCullough said, "If we do see that, you know maybe we get a little bit of that moisture back into the soil and green things up just a little bit again and maybe again we go back to that hard to hit 100 degree time again."

Tropical systems that move into the Texas Coast typically bring an abundance of moisture to the Concho Valley… and that if that occurs this season, more rain may be on the way.

Patrick McCullough said, "If we get it in the right spot then yeah we can keep some, we can get some water back into some of those lakes and reservoirs that, all though the ground has been fairly wet and the streams and creeks have been running at times this spring and summer they can always use a little bit more water into the lakes."
