The climate controlled facility made for a big draw to the San Angelo cutting horse competition. Kim Cox says "we got a lot of new people here who have never been here before. They have fallen in love with the facility, the town, our shows, and assured us they will be back." Exhibitors will travel to San Angelo rather than compete closer to home. The regular shows began in 2004 and are a favorite with many cutting horse competitors. Kim Cox says "I suppose that is why we won the 2006 affiliate of the year. We were just awarded that in June." Training the cutting horses takes time and requires the horses become familiar working the cows. Robert Rust says "we start them when they are two years old and get them broke for 30 to 60 days. Then we start working them on the cows and it takes about a year and half for the process." Saddles will be awarded at the end of the season in November to riders who have scored the most points during the season. Robert Rust says "you like to see someone make a smooth clean cut in the middle of the pen. You like to have a cow that provides a challenge to the horse. The closer to the middle of the pen the horse can control the cow, that makes for a good ride."
