vote2007-08-07-1186535534.jpgEarlier this year, the San Angelo City Council appointed seven citizens to look for ways to improve and update the city charter. A total of 24 changes are being proposed by the committee and Tuesday one of the most controversial issues was brought before city council. City Council Members looked into the idea of switching from a singel member district to a cumulative voting system. Currently each voter lives in one of six single member districts which are represented by one council member. The idea; making sure each part of the city has a voice on the city council. Changing to the cumulative voting system would allow all six council members to run at large at the same time. Voters would be allowed six votes that could be distributed among all the candidates, or they could accumulate all votes for one candidate. Council members and concerned citizens at Tuesdays meeting were not in favor of this change to the city charter. After a nearly tow hour discussion, the city council voted 7 to zero against the proposed change.
