shoes2007-08-03-1186177880.jpgYou hear of food drives and toy drives, this weekend it's a shoe drive. It's known as the Shoes for Orphan Souls Shoe Drive. A way in which local San Angeloan’s are giving to children all across the world. Nicole Sanchez has the story.....

Coordinator of shoe drive, Samantha Batten says, "I think it's important to offer every child the opportunity that children who have a loving family and I think they deserve shoes and clothing and someone to care for them and to love them just as anyone else does."

And a group from San Angelo is trying to make that possible for children, with holding a Shoes for Orphan Souls Shoe Drive. This 2 day event is a Ministry of Buckner in which Batten recently got involved in this summer help make a difference.

"When they pass shoes down from child to child and a lot of times that needs they are having to go without or wear shoes from the year before that are to small," Batten says.

One of the greatest needs of the orphans is a pair of shoes. Sometimes orphanages across the world do not receive enough funding to purchase any pairs. So to assist these children’s feet, any size, color or style can be taken to the drive to help.

Batten says, "You can bring anything from infant to men’s 13 size shoes. We're looking for baby's, teenage boys, so that leaves a really broad spectrum."

The goal of this shoe drive is to not only give orphan children in other countries a new pair of support for their feet but also their hearts.

"One of the ways we're trying to be a blessing to the child that receive these shoes is that we're asking people when they do come donate to fill out a card with their small note to a child and then a family's name. Just so that those children can hear from the people that gave them those shoes and fill the blessing and love from those families that have came all the way to them," Batten says.

The pairs that are fairly worn will be donated to various organizations across San Angelo. If you would like to drop off some shoes they will be located at the Sunset Mall parking lot on Saturday  from 8AM through 6PM.
