carax2007-07-27-1185586272.jpgFriday was a very busy day for law enforcement on area roadways. It all started last Thursday night around 9:00 with a hazardous spill on U.S. Highway 83. According to DPS officials, a tractor tanker hauling at least 8,500 gallons of gasoline out of San Antonio rolled over on Highway 83 in Menard.
The driver, who was traveling north into San Angelo, swerved to avoid a cow that made its way onto the roadway. The maneuver caused the load to shift, rolling the truck and cracking the tanker. Hundreds of gallons of gasoline spilled onto the roadway.  The Menard County Emergency Response Crew was the first on the scene, followed by TX DOT, and a Texas Commission Environmental Safety Crew from San Antonio.
At least 20 homes near the area were evacuated. Highway 83 was shut down at the Highway 29 junction. Sections of Highway's 87, 83, and 190 were also closed.
San Angelo Police were also called out to another accident on FM 585 around noon Friday afternoon. The driver of a Chevy pick-up crossed the center stripe, hitting a jeep head-on. The driver of the truck had two passengers, that were not injured. Both drivers involved in this accident went to area hospitals with unknown injuries.
San Angelo Police also responded to another two automobile accident around 11:00 Friday morning on Bryant Street. The drivers of a Chevy sedan and a Dodge pick-up truck collided. Traffic was back-up for about an hour while authorities cleared the scene. At least one person from this accident was transported to Shannon Medical Center for treatment.
