When three months old having two heart murmurs should be the familys last worry.
But it isnt for the Chavez family, a story on how the community of San Angelo is coming together to help with staggering medical bills for a young who is in the fight of her life.
She looks as healthy as can be, 3 months old, 14 lbs., but 2 days after Kimora Chavez was born, pediatricians found that this newborn’s heart had a defect.
Lindsey Chavez, Kimora’s mother says, “Pediatricians said that she had a murmur so, they said that it was 2 holes in her heart instead of one.”
Each one of Kimora’s holes is the size of a pea. The same dimension that almost 18 years ago Kimora’s mother, Lindsey’s murmurs were when she was 15 months old.
Freddy Chavez, Kimora’s grandfather says, “It’s hard to overcome. Because I almost lost her and I certainly don’t want to lose my granddaughter and that’s why it’s so important to me that people understand that when things like this happen we have to stick together and have to support each other in any possible way human,”
Each month the Chavez’s must take Kimora to San Antonio for special treatments paying close to $1,000 each month for the medical bills and many community members have joined to give a hand by holding a benefit for Kimora.
“We know that San Angelo has a great community and wonderful people that are going to help us and I thank each and every person who’s involved in this and hopes that this just goes well and we do what’s right and that’s by helping this little girl,” Freddy Chavez says.
“I know that people are wanting to help make a difference and at least save a life and not have her go thru the same thing that I went thru,” Lindsey Chavez says.
There is more than a 50% chance that Kimora will have the same surgery that her mother had, but her family along with the support of the community isn’t going to give up so easily.
“By donating by buying that plate at the end it will take it’s a toll and it will benefit this little girl that has no clue on what’s going on in this world,” Freddy Chavez says.
If you would like to take part in this fundraiser, they will be serving a brisket and sausage plate for $7.00 at the Texican Chop Shop located at 5 E. 29TH St. From 11 AM to 6 PM on July 14th. For more information you can contact Virginia at 659-4705.
