San Angelo mans Dies in Lubbock Hospital

The daughter of 47-year-old Johnny Lopez says her father had had angry outbursts in the past. But she says she never thought he would do anything to hurt anyone else, or himself. Erlinda Lopez the daughter of Johnny Lopez says he was real happy. He had his problems. Sometimes he would just go off. We dont know why. She says injury forced her father to leave his job with the city of San Angelo water department. That, and the loss of family members, she says, took its toll. Lopez say his parents passed away. He went through a lot of stuff with his parents, to lose both of them, one with cancer, one with stroke. Its been hard for him. On Monday afternoon around 3:30, Lopez reportedly told family members and neighbors he had planted an explosive device in his home on beacon street ...Although a later search turned up no such device. Officers arrived to find Lopez holding a gas can and -- they say -- a cigarette lighter. Police chief Tim Vasquez said he was carrying a gas can and a lighter, and threatened the officers on the scene by tossing gasoline at them and splashing at least one of the officers with gasoline. The situation had escalated to the point that the officers lives were at risk and they attempted to take the subject into custody. Police chief vasquez says officers first used pepper spray then a taser to subdue Lopez. The question for investigators now is what caused him to catch fire. Lopez was transported to university medical center in Lubbock where he was pronounced dead shortly before four this morning. Family members say theyre shocked and angry. Erlinda Lopez says his grandkids right now are crying for him because hes not here. They witnessed what happened yesterday to him. They couldnt sleep all night long. He was a good dad to us, and we miss him. San Angelo police have turned over the investigation to Texas rangers. Lopez body has been taken to the Lubbock county medical examiners office for autopsy.
