More improvements are coming to the Rio Vista area. The city recently installed a new pavilion, and restrooms in the park area. Now they're partnering with a group called the "People Plant Connection" to build a community garden.
"I think any partnership with the community and different groups to bring more activity and more life to our facility is a win-win situation, so I'm very excited about this," says Carl White, City of San Angelo's Park & Recreation Director.
The new three-acre garden will be next door to the Southside Recreation Center.
The group will plant new grass, plus trees and shrubs. They also plan to install new fencing and signage.
"Its right next to the Southside Recreation Center, and the Boys and Girls Club, and next to Rio Vista Headstart Facility, and the Rio Vista Neighborhood, so its a great location to be able to connect with the community," says White.
He says this will be a great way to teach people about the art of gardening.
"Its really about education, which I think is very important because kids, we are slowly losing the skill of gardening. Gardening is an excellent skill to help folks know how to raise plants, and food for actual consumption," says White.
The group has installed a rainwater collection system to help conserve water
"Harvesting the rainwater off the Recreation Center, and collecting it in these containers, they can actually water a good portion of the garden with that collected rain water," he says.
Construction will start in the next couple of months .
