Taks Test Will Be Going Away

By: KLST Staff
Updated: June 13, 2007
Beginning this fall, students entering the fifth grade will no longer have to take the "taks" test in high school. The Texas Legislature recently passed Senate Bill 1031 which replaces the taks test, with end-of-course tests in grades nine, ten, and eleven. Next years fifth graders when they get in the ninth grade for their testing their state testing they will not do taks they will do end of course exams, so we have several years before this will come to fruition." Assistant superintendent Joanne Rice says the students will have to pass tests in english i, ii, & iii, algebra i, geometry, algebra ii, biology, chemistry, physics, world geography, and u-s history. Now on each one of these test, the, lets take the english test. They have to, the three grades have to average to seventy, but no one test can be below sixty. Does that make sense? So uh, you know as we were discussing what if a child comes up and makes a 68 on the english one test, right now we dont know if they will be required to retest or will the child, will it be optional or not. Theres many rules that will have to be decided. San Angelo administrators are meeting in austin wednesday with the thirty largest school districts in texas to discuss the change in testing that goes into effect in four years. Well be compiling our questions as a group, so that we can start asking. So ive been sitting here writing every scenario i can think. Ok now what if they scored this what would happen, so well kind of play with it and see we have a few years to work on it.
