Barrel racing is an event that some might say would brings out the beauty in the sport of rodeo, and women from all over the state flocked to San Angelo as slack began Monday.
While this event is featured in many PRCA rodeos, these women belong to an organization all their own, the Women's Professional Rodeo Association or the WPRA.

Jimmie Munroe who has been the president of the WPRA for a total of 18 years says that the rodeo in San Angelo has a special meaning for the organization.

It was formed right here in West Texas, San Angelo, by a group of ranch women who were looking for a place they could go and they wanted standardized rules, fair and honest competition and here we are 65 years later.

The WPRA is the oldest women's sporting organization in the United States and has over 25 hundred members. Five time NFR qualifier Lisa Lockhart is one of them.

They've worked hard to get us what we have and the equality that we have with the men in rodeo. So they've been our back bone and strive to work for us all the time and they've made our association a great association.

An association that boasts of a broad spectrum when it comes to the ages of their members.

You see young people and older people and that's what's great about barrel racing.

An event that encompasses all ages...And an association that lives by their motto... For the past, present and future women in rodeo...
