Central High School is about to start it's 20th year of sponsoring a softball team. In the previous 19 the Lady Cats never qualified for the post-season. That hasn't stopped this years team from setting a goal to reach the playoffs.

EACH DAY WE'RE GETTING BETTER. I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO THE SEASON TO SEE HOW MUCH WE'VE IMPROVED.

YOU CAN SEE EVERYBODY PUTTING IN WORK, IT'S BEEN EXCITING, IT LOOKS LIKE A PROMISING YEAR.

WE'RE TAKING IT AS WE'RE GOING TO GO TO THE PLAYOFFS. WE'RE GOING TO COMPETE. AS LONG AS WE COMPETE EVERY GAME WE'RE GOING TO DO FINE.

Coach Pumphrey is new to the program this year, but she's not new to San Angelo. The Washington State native played two years at Angelo State and helped the 'Belles advance to the 2009 NCAA Division Two World Series.

SHE'S BEEN IN OUR SHOES AND SHE KNOWS HOW HARD PRACTICE IS AND HOW TO GET THROUGH IT.

IT SHOWS US THAT WE CAN ALL GO TO THE NEXT LEVEL. SHE'S GONE THROUGH WHAT WE'VE GONE THROUGH, SO YOU CAN'T MAKE EXCUSES.

Pumphrey feels like using the ASU formula at Central can lead to success.

I TRY TO DO IT ALMOST IDENTICAL.

Ultimately it'll come down to whether or not the players can get it done on game days, and the players are doing their part to make it happen.

THE HUSTLE, THE WORK ETHIC, PEOPLE STAY AFTER WHEN THEY DON'T HAVE TO. JUST BEING FASTER AND GETTING BETTER AND STUFF.

THERE'S A LOT OF HEART ON THIS TEAM AND HARD WORK AND FOCUS AND I THINK PUMPHREY HAS REALLY PUT A LOT OF HARD WORK IN OUR HEARTS AND GIVE US MOTIVATION TO DO BETTER AND TRY HARDER.

THIS IS WHAT IT TAKES, THIS IS WHAT YOU GOT TO DO AND I THINK THEY RESPECT THAT.

We'll get at how much progress the Lady Cats have made on February the 8th when they scrimmage Lake View on the Angelo State Campus.
