Many say that small businesses are the backbone of every community, and here in San Angelo that's certainly true.
A big economic change is soon to come to San Angelo, and small local businesses are already seeing the impact.
San Angelo Chamber of Commerce President, Phil Neighbors says, "We have had a very good year last year, as far as restaurant sales and hotel and motel sales, we had a lot of visitors in. And of course we have had an increase in energy and that's coming in with not only the major companies but a lot of the contractors coming in to support."
Small business membership numbers showed an increase last year and looking at this year, no change is in sight. But what does that mean for us every day residents, how does it truly affect us? Well according to local officials, sales tax is what is driving our community. And with our healthy sales tax here in San Angelo being up 28 straight months it means more people are working and confident in their spending.
Neighbors says, "Sales tax is at least two thirds of the local economy, and it's people feeling good about the economy, spending the money that they have, and everything from services to entertainment, to hard goods and services. but all of those dollars that are spent weather they come in from the outside or are spent here provide employment for people, not only jobs but better incomes for the owners, and more job security for the employee."
So with what has already taken place in the Concho Valley, the year twenty thirteen is expected to be a very good year economically.
