San Angelo--San Angelo Bandits Head Coach Chris Simpson spoke to KSAN regarding several things about his football team. Simpson talked about the process of recruiting players and the franchise's progress towards filling the roster.
"I do I like the players that we picked up, Chris Simpson said. "First and foremost I want guys with character guys with integrity because those are the type of guys who are going to have the work ethic to come out here and do the things that they need to do and bottom line is like any coach in this league or any league the bottom line is you come out here to win a championship and those are the types of guys to come out here and you know I've talked to every one of them, I've visited with them and I understand...I want to know what their goals are what do they want to pursue. I don't want career guys at this level, I want guys that will have opportunities to move up and that are looking to move up and are willing to move up and are willing to do that beause it doesn't come easy at this level."
The Bandits are also currently trying to get fans by going door to door, getting the word out about the team.
"In terms of community relations we're doing a grass roots thing," Simpson explains. "We're knocking on doors we're talking to potential partners, potential season ticket holders, once the players get here I'm gonna get them out in the community knocking on doors, but I want that local flavor."
The Bandits head man also addressed some of the special events they'll be hosting this weekend, like open tryouts.
"We're going to be getting ball babes out this weekend," Simpson said. "The mascots coming out there and so we're going to try and pick and choose some of those people and we want the public to come out there even if you're just a football fan just come out, watch, see these guys at the very infancy of just trying to make this football team and people that want to be a part of this organization in regards to being a mascot, or a ballboy."
Registration for the Try-Out opens at 11 thirty on Saturday at San Angelo Stadium. The season opener is set for Foster Communications Coliseum on March 16th against the New Mexico Stars. In all, the Bandits will have 12 games with 6 being at home and 6 being on the road.
