Hearing the sound of a fire alarm could be the difference from saving your home and losing it in a fire.

The San Angelo Fire Marshal's Office strongly recommends having the proper alert systems in place in the event of a fire to protect you and your family.

Karla Steppe is an investigator at the Fire Marshal's Office and she says having the proper fire alarms systems can alert you when a fire is imminent.

"If you have a fire, you're not going to see the fire, you're not going to smell the fire, you won't hear the fire if you're asleep so a smoke detector will give you early notification that there is a fire."

Steppe says that fire is not the only element you should be aware of.

"Most people think that the danger is the actual fire itself, yes fire is dangerous but what is fatal is the smoke that is released from a fire."

Steppe says that almost 80% of fire fatalities are caused by smoke inhalation injuires rather than burns and smoke detectors are the first line of defense to alert you of a fire.

She says that properly using heating equipment such as space heaters or fire places and routinely maintaining warning sytems can further protect you and your home from a fatal fire.

"Common practices like that will really go a long way." Steppe says, "we've seen a lot of happen because people get distracted, door bell rings, telephone rings, they leave a pan of grease on the stove and cathes on fire."
