The students met at A.S.U.'s lake front club house tuesday afternoon for a special workshop. A.S.U. Assistant To The President Joe Munoz said, "Schools out, but the "Up and Coming" Scholars are still participating in what we call enrichment programs." Despite the extra work, students like Katie McGowan did not seem to mind. McGowan said, "Oh, this is not work. This is fun stuff." The future scholarship recipients had a good time, but they were also learning about some very adult issues. Munoz said, "What we are doing here today of course, we have the Shannon: Right Choices For Youth Program. They send their educators here to talk about different topics that they might be facing in the future." These lessons take time out of the summer break, but that is time the students feel is well spent. McGowan said, "It's definitely worth it." Students are selected for the "Up and Coming" Scholars Program at the conclusion of their 9th grade year. If they are successful in completing all of the requirements, some students can look forward to help paying for their four year college degree. For more information on how the program works and the requirements, contact Angelo State University at 942-2073.
