vol2007-05-30-1180557070.jpgEvery week we bring you a volunteer who has gone over and beyond to make a difference in the Concho Valley. You can find this week’s Volunteer of the Week about anywhere and everywhere in town giving her time to make a difference to others….Sandy Whittley. She’s a Mother, Grandmother, full time employee and most importantly…“I’m a volunteer and with a capital V,” Sandy Whittley says. For over 30 years, Whittley has been dedicating her time to a range of organizations across San Angelo. “Ft. Concho, Adult Literacy Council, Habitat for Humanity, West Texas Rehab, Meals for the Elderly and West Texas Boys Ranch, anybody that needs any help,” Whittley says. From baking cookies for Meals for the Elderly to organizing many activities at Fort Concho, Whittley seems to always find time to do the thing that she loves to do the most….give “I believe when you have most of what you need and some of what you want then you need to give it away. I give service, because for a longtime, I didn’t have anything else to give and now then very few people give their service so that’s why I give,” Whittley says. Although Whittley is like many volunteers who offer their time without pay, she knows that there is a reward for her dedication. Whittley says, “The paycheck is interaction with the people and knowing that you’ve done something to help them and they wouldn’t be able to do it without your help.” This volunteer of the week hopes that her younger generations will carry on this gift of giving to others. “I think it’s important and I’m going to whip on my kids until they make sure that they give back the same, because there are cities, towns, and communities in any size they can’t make it without,” Whittley says. She hopes to continue volunteering for many more activities in the future, adding her touch to make a difference. “I want them to realize that I have given something back and I think that’s important.” Whittley’s next activity is the Ft. Concho's Pioneer Day which will be held June 9th.
