Friends of Literacy, a volunteer group, have planned activities for the month of September to raise awareness of illiteracy in the Concho Valley. Marilynn Golightly says " it is important that we learn our responsibility to look for solutions to the low education rate of adults in our community." Events like the street dance raise funds which operate the Adult Literacy Councils educational center. Marilynn Golightly says "we help to educate individuals that want to gain skills. They are 17 years old up to 89." The Literacy Council helps people learn simple things like sending emails to family. Local residents who did not go to school can learn to get their G.E.D. at Adult Literacy. Marilynn Golightly says "one individual that came in this week is 55 years old. He lived in San Angelo all his life and never went to school."
