Volunteer of the Week

By: Roger Gass
Updated: August 29, 2007

Everyone has to do something after they retire say Buck and Janet… and volunteering with the San Angelo Civic Theatre is what they do.

"We fell into this theater business back in 2003 with having to teach the choreographer how to country dance so that she can choreograph the current play which was Land of the River."

Following their introduction to the arts, Buck and Janet have dipped their hands in many productions during the last 5 years.

"We do work behind the scenes. We backstage manage. She works on costumes and now I am in charge of the usher program."

Buck says the show must go on and volunteers are what make the curtains rise.

"When you put on a production in the civic theater business like this you got to remember that there are only about four paid employees in this whole setup. Everybody else is a volunteer. So if you did not have everybody else you would not have an Angelo Civic Theatre."

While they have been married for nearly 50 years, the tag team of Buck and Janet began working together 10 years ago. Janet says she still likes to let Buck think he holds the reigns.

"I like to let him believe that he is in charge."

"I like to feel that way sometimes too."

Regardless of who is giving out the orders, the couple plans to continue their backstage work for many plays to come.

"Until we can't walk."

"As long as we can keep healthy we will be here."
