Santa Rita Days

The folks in Big Lake are celebrating Santa Rita days. The Big Lake chamber of commerce hosted the annual festival at the Reagan County Park Saturday. People of all ages came out for entertaiment, food, and shopping. The event celebrates the Santa Rita number one oil well there in the community.
Organizers of Santa Rita days say the festival allows people to celebrate what helps make big lake great.
Its our tenth year of having this festival. It celebrates the birthplace of the permian basin, basically, the first oil well in the permian basin. Says debbie rockwell, big lake chamber of commerce.
The oil well spudded in 1921 on the last day before the 18 month drilling permit was to expire. The Santa Rita number one oil well is named after the Saint of the Impossible Santa Rita.
