Here’s more on how 1,000 elementary age children will be headed back to school fully equipped. Since November 2006, Church members of The Heights Baptist Church have been planning and praying to do something to help out young community members. “When we see something like this happen, that seemed impossible we know that God made it possible,” is what Miriam Hickey event organizer says. Publicity coordinator Peggy Mathias says, “When we first began it’s almost unbelievable we think about getting 1,000 backpacks and all school supplies and everything that was needed." Thanks to the assistance of numerous businesses and church volunteers 1,000 elementary students will receive everything from free immunizations, hair cuts and it doesn’t stop there. “They will receive notebook paper, folders, rulers, scissors, crayons and erasers and as well as the backpacks,” Hickey says. For some students showing up on their first day of school with new supplies might be rare, but coordinators hope that this program will allow them to equip the students for a better school year. “For example the other day I had the opportunity to invite a family to come to our carnival and the Mom was so excited, she had tears in her eyes and said ‘I don’t know how to thank you and she said to her son, you get to have a backpack this year’,” Hickey says. The church members will prepare and hand out the bags at the carnival to area children, but they will not only pack school supplies, but also bundles of love. “That is what our compassion is. We’re following Christ compassion of those who needed things, so we’re following his compassion,” Hickey says. If your child would like to take part in this School Daze Carnival, it will be held at The Heights, 4512 Sherwood Way on August 4th from 10 A.M to -2 P.M.
