Springlike temperatures continuing into the middle of July have made being outdoors pleasant without the typical blistering summer heat. Buddy McIntryre says "It has been a cooler than normal summer, we have yet to reach 100 degrees. We did hit 97 degrees for a maximum temperature this year." Only twice since 1947 has San Angelo gone an entire summer without reaching 100 degrees. Buddy McIntyre says "One of those was in 1950 and the other in 1976. In each of those years the maximum temperature was 98." Construction crews laying the new water pipe on sunset have caught a break with the cooler weather and this is making their job easier. A persistent summer weather pattern featuring upper level highs in the western and southeastern united states has caused hot and dry weather in those regions. An area of low pressure across Texas has kept us cooler and wetter. Buddy McIntyre says "Generally, with areas of low pressure we have rising air and the moisture condenses. The clouds keep temperatures cooler than normal." Once a dry or wet pattern is established, the trend feeds on itself and is difficult to change. Buddy McIntyre says "the computer models keep trying to build the ridge of the west toward the central plains, but it just has not happened. The wetness in the ground is hard to overcome." The odds are against it happening, but 2007 could be the third year without a 100 degree day. Mike Moritz KLST News.>>
