trash2007-07-05-1183677879.jpgWhat would the 4th of July be without fireworks and Bar-B-Ques at the lake? We’ll all that fun can pile up to be a mess. City officials are dealing with the aftermath Thursday with sweepers and man power to clean up the debris.

The July 4th firework fun has come and gone across the Concho Valley, leaving many areas a wasteland on July 5th. One of the crew members having to deal with this debris at Twin Buttes is section chief at lake operations, Raul Deanda.

“You think people would pick up their trash, but it’s this way every year,” Deanda says.

Several acres at Twin Buttes and Lake Nasworthy have to be cleared of almost every type, size and shape of fireworks to dispose of at the city’s landfill. Deanda says that this year’s holiday’s mess has sparked to be one of the biggest.

“This year more because, there’s been more fireworks popped than last year because last year there was a fire ban, so this year probably several more than last year,” Deanda says.

The piles of trash left by the 4th of July crowds will take about a week for workers to clean up. But with the amount of trash and the possibility of more rain, it’s a task that will have to be completed soon.

“We’re trying to get it, keep it from going into the lake that’s what our concern is. That’s it going into the lake and then it’s really going to be really bad. It’s harder to get it out but all this stuff out here, we’re doing what we can, we can’t get it all every time, so we’re doing the best we can,” Deanda says.

Area inmates are expected to help out with the 4th of July mess next week.
