Take at 2:05 it started as a buffalo camp..... Jay burns is the executive director of the snyder chamber of commerce -- hes already making plans for the towns big centennial celebration later this year -- to mark the towns incorporation in 1907. Just 30 years before that -- tens of thousands of buffalo roamed the rolling hills in scurry county. Take at 3:47 this bronze statue of a white buffalo is on the town square in snyder -- a local artist created it to mark an historical event that took place in 1876 -- a buffalo hunter shot and killed a rare albino buffalo -- one of only two show at the time in texas. Take at 2:18 in the 1870s the white buffalo was shot here -- that was the end of the indian wars....permanent structure....a guy named pete snyder built a store. Burns says the population of the town almost tripled when the oil boom hit in the 1940s. Take at 3:08 oil was discovered in the 1940s...But not until 1950....when the big boom hit. >>
