Officers Given Administrative Assignment

Six San Angelo Police officers have been put on administrative assignment following the death of a suspect this past monday. Police and eyewitnesses say that 47 year old Johnny Lopez poured gasoline on himself and was threatening to burn down his house in the 17-hundred block of Beacon Street monday afternoon. Police tried to defuse the situation using pepper spray, but eventually had to taser the man. Lopez caught fire during the struggle and eventually died at a Lubbock hospital.
Still in question: What caused the fire? The body has been sent to the Lubbock Medical Examiners Officer for an autopsy. The six officers on the scene have all been placed on administrative assignment, but the San Angelo Police Department says that the officers will return to regular duty as soon as possible.
This entire investigation has been turned over to the Texas Rangers, and KSAN News has learned that the investigation is already underway.
