The trial of San Angelo city councilman Danny Cardenas ended before testimony even began Wednesday afternoon. Cardenas agreed to a pre-trial diversion, allowing him to avoid criminal charges by following a set of court orders for six months. Cardenas was facing a charge of resisting arrest. A city marshal says the city council member was combative during a traffic stop in august near city hall. The marshal stopped Cardenas for allegedly making an illegal left turn, but attempted to arrest him on two outstanding traffic warrants. Cardenas worked out an agreement to cover the two outstanding warrants. And now...If he completes the six-month pre-trial diversion, the charge of resisting arrest will be dismissed. Cardenas declined an on-camera interview. In a written statement, he said most of the things hes been ordered to do are things he already does, like refraining from drinking and performing community service. He said he stands by his plea of "not guilty," and blames what he calls "political pressure" for his prosecution. Cardenas represents single member district three on the San Angelo city council.
