At the Carmelite Hermitage, the monks are busy baking lots of homemade goodies for the Lent and Easter Season. The season of Lent, recognized by most Christian Churches, is the six week period leading up to Easter Sunday. During that time many people fast, or give up some kind of luxury.
One of their most popular products is the "Lenten Bread," which is sugar and dairy free.
"The taste is so good, and its moist, and it lasts a long time, its a very hearty piece of bread, if someone is fasting in the morning like bread and coffee, its perfect," says Father Fabian, who started the hermitage about 22 years ago.
The hermitage, located just outside Christoval, about two miles down Allen Lane, opened in 1991. They started baking breads, and other goodies about 15 years ago as a way to support themselves.
"In this way we work in silence so we can keep our recollection, and keep our way of prayer, and at the same time we produce a good product,"says Fabian.
They're also making Lamb Cakes for Easter Sunday.
"Its a white cake with a lemon flavor, and its got raisins in it, and it's made a little stiffer, so it can hold its shape, and just regular white icing," says Brother Martin, a Monk at the Hermitage.
He says the cake makes a great center piece for Easter Sunday.
"Take it and use it as a center piece for your table, for your Easter table, so you can bring back the meaning of what we want to try and do, is introduce the meaning of Christ into Easter," says Martin.
They say they've enjoyed baking their homemade goods for the public.
"When you make a product that's appealing and that's attractive and that tastes good and that people enjoy, it allows you to see your life in another context, so that what your doing is bringing joy to other people."
