Bright lights, awards and judges are just a few things that may come to mind when you think about stock shows and rodeos. But what happens when it's all quiet in the arena? Here in San Angelo, education takes center stage.

Students from around the Concho Valley were getting some hands on experience Tuesday learning about everything from the rough stock to how important exercise and proper nutrition can be.

We like to talk about nutrition, environment, the importance of agriculture in their lives, they don't know where their food comes from so  by coming out here it gives us the opportunity to not only speak to the children but their parents as well.

Hilary Valdez is a first grade teacher at Santa Rita elementary in San Angelo and says this is a great opportunity for her students because they get to use their five senses and that helps them learn...They also gain experience when it comes to being around animals.

This is most exciting day of the whole year for the kids, very few of them have had any ranch or farm experience. Their eyes are bright they're full of energy all day because they get to experience a whole bunch of new things."

Some of those newly learned skills include taking care of themselves by eating right, getting exercise and drinking plenty of milk...As well as how to take care of animals.

We have to take care of them, you know, we have that responsibility to take care of our animals whether it be a dog or a cow. That's our responsibility.

Stock shows and rodeos are probably best know for their blue ribbons and bucking bulls but education also plays a vital role when it comes to raising healthy animals and healthy kids.
