Angelo State University is celebrating its seventh consecutive long semester of record high graduate enrollment, but undergraduate numbers are down this spring semester after a record setting spring semester last year.
They say word of mouth is one of the most powerful tools when it comes to recruiting students into a college, and even though ASU has a vast amount of people out spreading the word about the University, the enrollment numbers still fell.
Brian May says, "Even though we are down we are still much higher than we were 5 or 6 years ago, but we still take it very seriously"
This springs enrollment, compared to last springs, fell 3.6 percent, bringing the total number of students attending Angelo State University 6,149 students.
Brian May, "Fall of twenty twelve our enrollment was down as well as most enrollments across the states, especially community colleges but regional universities like ours pretty much we are down across the whole state, we know we are working really hard trying to get the word out to high school seniors and juniors across the state of Texas as well as other states, trying to bolster our enrollment for fall 2013"
May says some of the reason why enrollment is down could be because so many students are choosing to take advantage for the resurgence of the oil field industry.
May says, "Some of the students are coming out of high school and going straight into the work force, especially as the oil field is being as buoyant as it is, and the high salaries that are being offered to the high school graduates, they are electing to go to work first."
But even with this slight headcount decrease may says the University's positive that it isn't permanent. "We just think it's a trend right now with our buoyant economy and we think it will reverse itself over the next year or two."
