Today's rainfall is the most significant we've seen in months -- during a year that's now on the record books at the hottest ever recorded in the united states.

Texas is one of 19 states recording the hottest temperatures in 2012...and it was also one of the driest in Texas.

Across the country the average annual u-s temperature rose last year to more than 55 degrees, that's a full degree warmer than the old record in 1998.

San Angelo Meteorologist Steve Lyons says the ground is so dry very little rain runoff reaches area lakes.

"Even though we may get a little more rain things might green up a little bit it might be good for farming locally with that rain we have to keep in mind locally that with our catchments how is our water supply doing and right now we are very low with our water supply like right now we get the rain it moistens the soil but we don't get the runoff because its so dry and so those things don't rise like they normally would if it were already sort of moist."

Some scientists say the u-s heat is part global warning and natural weather variations.
