A new program called "RADKIDS" will begin this year for all San Angelo elementary school students.

It's designed to teach them how to protect themselves on everything from bullying to abuse...and abduction.  Marcus Officer reports.

"San Angelo is a model community for child safety and we are leading the way"

Safe Kids of San Angelo along with AngeloStateUniversity are co-sponsoring a new child safety program for all San Angelo elementary school children..

"RADKIDS" will teach children how to protect themselves from potential dangers such as abuse, bullying and abduction..

"It's going to educate our kids on what to do if someone comes up to them and wants to hurt them. They're going to know what to do. It covers all safety aspects and risk areas of children."

Training for children includes lectures, safety drills, and muscle memory exercises to help them responsibly know how and when to use the techniques taught to them.

Students will receive eight hours of training in the program during physical education classes.

A 136-thousand dollar grant will pay for a week-long intensive training session for 37 SAISD elementary and head-start teachers.

"We have a very loving and caring community and everybody wrapped their hands around it for the protection of our children and it happened so fast, and when you reach out to help, our community says yes, what can we do to help our children."

The program will be offered to almost seven-thousand San Angelo elementary school students.

RADKIDS teacher training begins later this month..

"I am so pleased and so humbled that all of these heroes in our community that were able to bring this program to SAISD."
