A grant of more than one million dollars will fund the new center. It will replace the San Angelo Fire Department training facility on South Concho Drive built in 1965.
The new center will be built behind the city animal shelter on Highway 67 North. It's expected to be open for use in three years.
Firefighters from San Angelo and surrounding Concho Valley counties will train there.
This is fire prevention week.
As they do every year -- San Angelo firefighters visit area schools to teach elementary students about the importance of having a family escape plan if a fire starts in their home.
It's actually a good idea to have your child learn ''two'' escape routes or have ''two ways out''. And that's the theme for this year's fire prevention lessons.
